MUSTANG REGION TREKKING

Mustang literally means fertile plain in Tibetan. It is the former Kingdom of Lo which is located in Mustang district in the north-central part of Nepal, bordering Tibet.  It is geologically and culturally part of the Tibetan plateau. The entire  Mustang valley is arid and desert-like landscape with colorful rock formations containing many caves and canyons high up in the vertical cliffs. One can hear strong winds generally howling across the barren land in the afternoon, subsiding at night

 

Here one can explore the 16th-century monasteries adorned with unrivaled frescoes, Thanka art, and status of gigantic deities. The ancient culture, language and traditional way of life of the people of Mustang is quite similar to those of the Tibetan people.  The people of Mustang call themselves Lobas and they had their own King, Jigme Palbar Bista. He used to grant audience to the visitors to his palace when he was alive.

 

Travelers were allowed for trekking in Upper Mustang in 1992. Each year very few trekkers around 700 trekkers visit Upper Mustang. Mustang being a restricted area declared by Government of Nepal, all foreign trekkers need to fulfill certain formalities to get a special permit.  Trekking to Mustang region allows trekkers plenty of time to explore authentic culture, many legends, and secrets. Despite one can also enjoy the spectacular Mountain View of   Mount Dhaulagiri (8167 m) andAnnapurna I (8091 m)

 

Mustang being a rain- shadow area in Nepal even in monsoon i.e., June, July, August is considered the best month for trekking. Upper Mustang Trek, Tiji Festival trekking to Mustang and Damodar Kunda  Mustang trekking are the most popular trips in Nepal.
